Kraken: The First Crypto Bank with Fed Access

A Historic Breakthrough in Crypto and Finance Integration

Kraken: The First Crypto Bank with Fed Access

Kraken has become the first crypto company in history to gain direct access to the "heart" of the U.S. financial system — the Federal Reserve's payment infrastructure.

Following five years of intensive regulatory engagement and audits, Kraken Financial has officially been granted a Federal Reserve master account. This is far more than just technical news; it is a fundamental shift that finally erases the boundary between the world of digital assets and traditional finance.

Why is this Important

Until now, every crypto company in the U.S. was forced to operate through intermediaries — traditional correspondent banks. This created extra links in the chain, increased fees, and slowed down settlements. With a master account, Kraken Financial connects directly to payment rails, including the key Fedwire system.

For clients and investors, this means:

  • Instant settlements: Fiat funds (USD) can now move between the bank and the crypto market without the delays previously caused by intermediaries.
  • Maximum reliability: Kraken Financial operates on a full-reserve model (Wyoming SPDI). This means the bank is required to hold at least 100% of client deposits in liquid assets — unlike traditional banks, which use depositor funds for lending.
  • Atomic transactions: In the long term, this will enable an architecture where settlements between fiat and crypto assets occur almost simultaneously.

Direct Connection to the State

As noted by Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Payward (Kraken), the company is ceasing to be a "peripheral participant" and is becoming a full-fledged, directly connected financial institution.

This milestone marks the convergence of crypto infrastructure and sovereign financial rails. With a Federal Reserve master account, we can operate not as a peripheral participant in the US banking system, but as a directly connected financial institution.

This designation creates a regulated bridge for institutional investors. Large funds can now manage capital and store digital assets within a single transparent structure that interacts directly with the Federal Reserve.

What this Means for Investors

For us as investors, this step is further confirmation of the maturity of Kraken and its holding company, Payward. Obtaining a Fed master account is a powerful competitive advantage ahead of an IPO. It demonstrates the highest level of compliance and trust with U.S. regulators, which is critical to the company's valuation upon entering the public markets.
